“Rock ’n' Roll dazzles us with a spectacular political debate…a brilliant, ferocious performance…rock and roll is here to stay!”
   —THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 9/26/08

“The Wilma Theater rocks another Tom Stoppard production! Nobody in Philadelphia does Tom Stoppard better than The Wilma Theater…an adroit and smart production, but also a very human one.”
   —PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY, 10/1/08

“Don't miss it - it's brilliantly conceived!”
   —WRTI, 9/26/08

This monumental and extraordinarily theatrical event from Academy Award and four-time Tony® Award winner Tom Stoppard (The Invention of Love), was a recent hit on Broadway following a record-breaking run in London. In 1968, as the world is ablaze with rebellion, Jan, a young Cambridge graduate student with little but a prized collection of rock albums, returns to his homeland of Czechoslovakia just as Soviet tanks are rolling into Prague. Back in England, Jan’s mentor, Max, a professor of Marxism, faces his own crisis as the idealism he so strongly held onto smashes against the landscape of political upheaval. Stoppard’s epic tale combines history, conflict, and passion, and spans 22 turbulent years, at the end of which, love remains – and so does rock ‘n’ roll.

Incorporating classic recordings from the biggest names in rock music (subject to change): SYD BARRETT, THE BEATLES, BOB DYLAN, PINK FLOYD, JOHN LENNON, THE PLASTIC PEOPLE OF THE UNIVERSE, THE ROLLING STONES, THE VELVET UNDERGROUND

Approximate running time: 2 hours and 40 minutes (includes a 15-minute intermission)

“Triumphant…Rock ‘n’ Roll is arguably Stoppard’s finest play…he is a magician, and this is a passionate, decades-spanning tale of love, revolution, and music!”
   —THE NEW YORK TIMES

“Funny, blunt and absolutely true to its title…Emotionally raw and historically detailed.”
   —ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE

"I'm delighted that my long relationship with The Wilma Theater will be continuing with Rock ’n’ Roll. I feel among friends."
   —TOM STOPPARD,
